Michael D. Minton, shareholder at Dean, Mead, Minton & Zwemer, and his wife Misty, attended the 2015 Take Stock in Children awards ceremony, hosted by the Indian River State College Foundation, on May 18 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center, Fort Pierce, Florida.
Take Stock in Children is a comprehensive program that helps at-risk, low-income children succeed by providing college scholarships, volunteer mentors, student advocates/case managers, early intervention, and long-term support. High standards, parental involvement, and community support are crucial to the program’s success.
For many years, Dean Mead has partnered with Indian River State College Foundation to jump start the “President’s Challenge/Take Stock in Children” scholarship program. Now in its 19th year, the program at IRSC identifies capable, at-risk eighth and ninth graders in Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties and promises a full scholarship at a Florida college or university if the students focus on good citizenship, maintain a solid GPA and graduate from high school.
The positive outreach of this program has led to extraordinary results. In 2009, the firm established the Robert “Bobby” Klein Memorial Endowment Scholarship created to honor the legacy of Bobby Klein, a champion of education and a former member of Dean Mead.
Donte Hetzer-Harris received the Michael and Misty Minton Scholarship a few years ago. He used his scholarship to complete both his AA and his police academy certification from IRSC. Michael and Misty proudly supported him at his graduation as well.
To date 915 scholarships have been awarded. Our firm and our clients are reaping the benefits — seeing students who might otherwise not have finished high school go on to graduate from college and returning to become contributing citizens of the community.
