In an article published by the TCPalm on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, Lee Dobbins discusses a $595M development that may come to Fort Pierce.
The nation’s largest “WaveGarden,” or simulated surfing park, is slated to come to Midway Road as part of a 200-acre community development. The community is expected to feature 800 residential homes, 600 hotel rooms, 400,000 square feet of retail space, 125,000 of office space and thousands of potential jobs.
Per the Economic Development Council, this project would create about 3,400 jobs during the construction period and up to 1,900 jobs annually.
While there are many existing WaveGardens around the world – dozens still in the development stage – this would be the largest. The facility features a massive swimming pool-like area that creates up to 1,000 waves of varying shapes per hour and can hold around 100 surfers.
According to Dobbins, this will attract people from Fort Pierce, across the country and around the world.
“It’s really planned as a whole new coastal community, which is several miles away from the coast,” he states. “It’s planned around a WaveGarden.”
Backing the project was Pete Tesch, president of the St. Lucie County Economic Development Council, whom suggested it would be a big economic boom for the local economy.
