Orlando, Fla. – The 2014 Florida Bar Annual Convention, held in Orlando, June 25-27 marked the graduation of Felipe Guerrero – a business litigation attorney with the law firm of Dean, Mead, Egerton, Bloodworth, Capouano & Bozarth, P.A. in Orlando – from the William. Reece Smith, Jr. Florida Bar Leadership Academy. Guerrero was selected as an Inaugural Fellow in June 2013. Membership to the Academy is extremely competitive; Guerrero was chosen as one of 59 inductees out of hundreds of applicants from throughout the state.
Approved by The Florida Bar Board of Governors in 2013, the program consists of a one year curriculum, with the goal of reaching out to lawyers from across the state of Florida to give them the skills and resources to become leaders in the legal profession and their communities. The program included six meetings at locations throughout the state, and culminated at the Bar’s Annual Convention in 2014. The syllabus focused on developing skills and networking opportunities within the legal profession and having the fellows create projects to put their new skills to use.
The 2014 graduates were recognized at a celebratory luncheon following the commencement ceremony, sponsored by the Orlando-based graduates and their respective firms. “I had a wonderful experience participating in the Academy. Having the opportunity to interact with so many amazingly talented people from all over the state of Florida was a privilege. The relationships and friendships I made through my involvement in the Academy will last for a lifetime,” Guerrero commented.
The leadership component that is built into the program serves as an exceptional opportunity for attorneys to further hone their skills. Guerrero said, “My experience in the Academy prepared me to recognize and take advantage of the opportunities to lead that present themselves every day. The Academy also highlighted the leadership ability that each one of us has to make a difference.” In turn, Academy Fellows are instrumental in instilling this potential in the legal professional and their communities.. Adds Guerrero, “I think leadership is about having confidence in your ability to lead while continuing to listen and learn. Effective leaders are adaptable and are able to maximize their resources.”
Guerrero received his law degree in 2005 from the University of Florida Levin College of Law and his undergraduate degree from the University of Central Florida in 2001. From 2012-2013, he served as the President of the Hispanic Bar Association of Central Florida, and was a member of the Board of Directors from 2008-2013. Guerrero currently serves as a Board member on the Executive Committee of the Orange County Bar Association.
With more than 95,000 members, The Florida Bar is charged by the Supreme Court of Florida with the regulation of the practice of law in Florida, as well as promoting the administration of justice. For more information about the Leadership Academy, visit www.floridabar.org/leadershipacademy.
