The rules, which are expected to be finalized in the next several months, will primarily affect employees who make between $23,660 and $50,440 who engage in duties that are more supervisory in nature. Presenter: Justine Thompson Cowan, Esq.

Justine Cowan_Headshot Justine Thompson Cowan, Esq., is the owner of Cowan Consulting for Nonprofits which provides strategic and legal solutions to help nonprofits grow and thrive. Justine provides practical advice to nonprofit organizations on laws related to corporate governance, regulatory compliance, tax exempt status, conflicts of interest, fundraising, human resources, lobbying, and more. Justine has over 20 years of experience in the public interest sector where she has served in a variety of leadership roles for local, state and national nonprofit organizations. For 13 years, she served as Executive Director of Atlanta-based GreenLaw, where she provided legal and strategic counsel to nonprofit organizations while also raising over $5 million for environmental and social justice causes. Drawing upon these experiences, Justine counsels nonprofits on board recruitment and development, fundraising fundamentals, transition management, strategic planning and more.

Justine received her law degree with honors from Duke University School of Law (’95) where she served on the Editorial Board of the Duke Law Journal. Following law school, she served as a federal court law clerk for the Honorable Robert L. Echols, United States District Court, Middle District of Tennessee. She received her B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley (’88).

Presenter: Nichole M. Mooney

Nicky Mooney 14-129-03 (4x6@300) Nicky Mooney is a shareholder and employment law attorney in Dean Mead’s Litigation department. She represents individuals and businesses of all sizes in business litigation and employment related issues. Her representation includes drafting employment and severance contracts, drafting handbooks and policies, and counseling and representing employers in litigation regarding all types of employee actions, rights and obligations, including, but not limited to, wage and hour questions and disputes, FMLA issues, claims of discrimination, retaliation, theft of trade secrets, and all other manner of employment related litigation under Florida and federal law. Ms. Mooney also addresses claims regarding restrictive covenants including non-compete agreements, trade secrets litigation and protection of confidential information.

In addition, Ms. Mooney is involved in all areas of complex business litigation in both state and federal courts ranging from simple contract disputes to issues arising from the dissolution of a business entity and derivative litigation. Ms. Mooney has state and federal courtroom experience in both jury and non-jury trials. She also has experience in administrative proceedings with the EEOC, Florida Commission on Human Relations and Orlando Human Relations Department.
